The database design methodology used by a major US. commercial bank is described. The methodology is used for designing databases that support a large integrated real-time application. The methodology consists of four phases: • Conceptual Design • Detailed Conceptual Design • Logical Design • Physical Design Each design phase corresponds to a particular phase of the standard project life cycle used at the organization. For each database tlesign phase, data collection and analysis, required documentation, and review procedures are described. The bank’s experience with and benefits derived from the design methodology are described, as well as current limitations of the methodology.
