One of the significant developments of research in Artificial Intelligence and databases is the adoption of knowledge-based techniques for automating database design. This paper examines the database design process by phases, identifies the key challenges of each, and discusses how a knowledge-based approach could contribute to meeting these challenges. For each design phase, two or three prototype systems that employ interesting knowledge-based techniques are analyzed using a common framework and example. Based on this discussion, suggestions are made for future research.
