Over the past few years much progress has been made in the data base management (DBM) area. An indication of the interest in this area is the publication of a large number of DBM books within a short span of time. Another indicator is the organization of annual conferences (such as the International Conference on Very Large Data Bases, SIGMOD International Conference on Management of Data and IFIP TC-2 Working Conference on Data Base Management Systems) devoted fully to DBM. Due to these activities, voluminous amounts of literature have been published.
