The process of database design can be divided into several sta, ges. This four-stage process comprises: Rquirements collection: In this stage, users are interviewed to obtain descriptions of their information needs. This results in a preliminary specification of needs of all user groups in an organization. Conceptual design: A conceptual model of the application is developed using the data collected in the first stage. This model is independent of the databaw management system to be employed. Logical design: The conceptual model is translated into a specific model such as the relational, network or hierarchical model. For example, if a relational database management system (DBMS) is to be used, the relations to be implemented are specified. Physical design: The logical schema from the logical design step is mapped into a storage representation for a DBMS. The appropriate storage structures, indexes, and physical parameters to optimize performance are selected.
