Motivated by our experiences with agri-environmental information management and planning for the sustainable land use initiative we present an ontology-based approach for aligning whole farm plan data with other data collections of interest. Semantic interoperability is of utmost importance to enable seamless integration across multiple data collections. Web-based systems combining GIS-technology with ontologies can support environmental information analysts in assessing the interplay between natural resources, farming practices and environmental issues on farms and in generating farm-specific recommendations for sustainable land management. At the same time such systems unlock data collected or produced during the generation and monitoring of whole farm plans for new applications and broader user groups, including agronomists and scientists working in related disciplines.
