The practice of data processing includes creating data models in the course of system planning and requirements definition work. Most data modelers use a technique that combines a variant of the Entity-Relationship modeling approach introduced in Chen (n.d.) with the schema normalization procedures that were first described by Codd (1970,1972). Upper CASE tools usually include a facility that supports this style of data modeling.
