The strategic database (SDB) is an integral part of a decision support system (DSS) developed to support the strategic planning process in organizations. This paper describes two approaches to SDB design–the descriptive approach and the prescriptive approach. Its purpose is to examine the assumptions underlying both approaches and to note the tradeoffs involved in adopting one approach over the other.
