Developing an understanding of the application domain is a critical aspect of system development. A conceptual model is a representation of an application domain intended to support the analysis, documentation and communication of knowledge about the domain. However, despite their importance in acquiring and documenting this knowledge, conceptual modeling methods often do not provide well-formalized ways to create domain descriptions. The lack of formalization can lead to unclear, ambiguous, or incomplete models, as well as to variability of models of the same domain created by different individuals.
