The use of social media is prevalent in our daily lives, whether at the coffee shop, the workplace or in higher education. In higher education, some instructors are using social media in their courses to promote collaborative learning, yet studies have shown that in classrooms where students who frequently but ad-hocly use social media, typically perform more poorly than students who seldomly use social media. We believe that one of the key reasons attributing to this poor performance is the absence of a systematic approach to facilitate the use of social media in collaborative teaching. In this research, we are investigating whether the cognitive processing of materials regarding each level of Bloom’s Taxonomy are equally impacted by the use of social media in classroom, and whether a systematic approach to integrate social media in classrooms will improve students’ performance. We plan to evaluate the approach through multiple studies across multiple disciplines. We posit our findings will create a positive impact on student’s learning in classrooms where social media is unprecedented.
