Prior research in categorization has taken an ontological approach based on natural science: organizing concrete objects into categories or natural kinds based on commonly possessed properties. Social ontology suggests that within social contexts, objects are purposefully categorized not based on physical properties but on ascribed attributes indicative of status functions or power relationships. In this article we explore the nature of such purposeful categorization.
