While there has been considerable research on how (and how well) analysts communicate with users, there has been very little attention paid to their communication with programmers. Evidence is provided to show that the specifications analysts produce, particularly with the UML, can be excessive, incomplete and inconsistent. While some have proposed tools to address these issues, there is little research on the problem itself. This research is intended to examine what UML diagrams programmers have available to them, which they find most useful (and why others are less useful), and complete and consistent the content is.
