Software architecture, if properly chosen and implemented, shapes organizational operations and if properly aligned with proper skills and organizing can provide a competitive advantage. Given the fast change in the business landscape, however, the change of software architecture may be warranted to some extent or completely. Our study identifies the organizational impacts of transitioning from tightly coupled monolith systems – partially or entirely – to decoupled microservice based architectures. We compare the assimilation process and impact of such transitioning within large and small and medium sized software development organizations (SDOs), including start-ups. Our initial findings highlight notable differences on the assimilation process depending on SDO size and maturity. Similarily, the size moderates the impact on the organizational structure and the choice of transitioning strategy. Generally, proper training of teams and strategically chosen services and selective outsourcing are crucial for succeeding in transitioning due to radical shift in skills and responsibilities.
