Conceptual models are used in systems analysis, requirements engineering, databases, and software engineering. Diverse views about what should be represented and included in a conceptual model exist in the various research communities. In this paper we present an effort to unify the various views of conceptual modeling that exist in the different research communities. The view combines issues related to modeling grammars, the purpose of modeling, modeling semantics, and ontology underlying the modeled domain. We support the unified view by several meta-models which we represent visually. We demonstrate the potential value of the integrated view by showing some insights into the design, evaluation, and use of modeling grammars for information systems analysis and design.
