Conceptual modeling is a very important, but difficult
step in database development. It is essential to determine
what novices have understood so that tailored feedback
can be provided to help them learn. In this paper, we
report on a preliminary study, where we found that the
errors in modeling provide good starting points for
determining what concepts novices understand. To
determine why novices make errors and to ensure they
have understood the concepts, we also need to measure
level of understanding (even if there are no errors).
